Missouri: Stop the violence and racism! Adopt the Ferguson Commission's Recommendations

  • by: Nathan Empsall
  • recipient: Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and the Missouri Legislature

"The law says all citizens are equal. But the data says not everyone is treated that way." - The Ferguson Commission

In the wake of last summer's police killing of unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown, Ferguson has become a national symbol of pain - but it has the chance to become a national symbol of healing. Just as Missouri's citizens have led a movement for justice, its officials can lead a seismic shift in policy.

The Ferguson Commission was appointed by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon "to address the underlying root causes that led to the unrest in the wake of Michael Brown’s death and to publish an unflinching report."

That report is now public, and contains 189 Calls to Action to help stop police brutality and combat systemic racism. Some of the recommendations deal with police reform, while others address the underlying causes of inequality.

Sign today and ask Governor Nixon and the Missouri Legislature to do their part in leading the nation and stopping the disportionate violence against Black lives by adopting the recommendations of the Ferguson Commission, including:

  • Create Civilian Review Boards
  • Revise Use of Force Policies and Increase Training
  • Minimize Use of Militarized Weaponry
  • Establish Use of Force Database
  • Support Officer Well-Being
  • Require Psychological Screenings for New Hires
  • Determine Defendants' Ability to Pay
  • Ensure Equitable Access to Rigorous Courses for All High School Students
  • Create Fair Housing Protections
  • End Predatory Lending
