Support Local Zika Prevention

"What you should be worried about is that...local transmission will occur in Florida" says US Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Two cases of local transmission of Zika are under investigation by the Florida Department of Health. The first was in Miami-Dade the second in Broward. There is a good chance the third will be ours in Palm Beach County.

The $5.5 million in funding promised by President Obama to fight Zika in Florida needs to support local efforts to prevent the spread of mosquitoes. Testing and spraying are not enough. Communities need to be prepared and organized to protect themselves, going yard by yard to spill pools of water several times a week. Even something as small as a bottle cap can incubate up to 300 mosquito eggs.

Our families, our neighbors, and our communities ask you to spend these $5.5 million on hiring staff for local mosquito control and health departments. It is not enough to knock on doors or spray insecticides, we must organize communities to defend themselves. Governor Scott can do this by hiring staff that respect the cultural and linguistic diversity of our LEP (limited English proficient) communities.

Ask Governor Scott to act now to prevent what is forecast to be a tragic outbreak of Zika and microcephaly.

Sign this petition and let Governor Rick Scott know mosquito control is a community effort.
