Demand the city make animal welfare their priority

After 25 years the city has given the contract for enforcing city by-laws (liscense, impound, strays etc) to a new company with questionable tactics. Their introduction has forced the local SPCA to remove themselves from our area. This leaves a huge gap for animal welfare on the North Island. The nearest SPCA is 40 miles away. They are not equipped to handle the influx of animals that they will receive. There will be no more animal adoptions in Campbell River area. Animals that are not reclaimed after 72 hours will be moved to a location 2 hours away to adopt out. Who will investigate animal welfare issues? Abuse? Injured and sick animals? We want the city to be accountable for the decisions that they have made. We want our voices heard.

Dear Mayor Jakeway,

As I am sure you are aware, many members of our community are unhappy with the decision to award the contract for animal control to Coastal Animal Services. In granting the contract to the "lowest bidder" city council left it to a roll of the dice wether the SPCA would stay to serve Campbell River. It is obvious that they felt they could not manage on the budget that they were given. I firmly believe that had the community been offered a role in this decision, knowing what was at stake that they would have stepped up to the plate financially. As you can see by this petition there are signatures from all over the world and we are gaining media attention that reaches well beyond our small community. There is still time  to listen to the voice of those that the city council serves.. Please consider all that is at stake and award the impounding contract to the SPCA. We hope for a quick resolution so that the SPCA can be back to start taking care of our most vulnerable citizens. The animals. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Diane Palmer
