In 1996, a World Peace Candle has been given to the United Nations by the Swiss government. It shall be lit as soon as all nuclear weapons are abolished, as a first step to total disarmament.
In the meantime, politicians like Barack Obama are actively endorsing nuclear disarmament. With this petition, the world community encourages all world leaders and the UN to take the necessary steps.
The World Peace Candle was a one of the projects of the Global Initiative which was founded by Dr. Roland Schutzbach and others.
The international patrons of the Global Initiative were the Dalai Lama and Mikail Gorbachev.
The project of the candle was supported by Dr. Patch Adams, USA, famous health activist, as well as by the mayors of San Francisco and Berkeley and the Butterfly Gardeners Association (Alan Moore).
Private organisations cannot donate anything to the UN. Therefore the Swiss government consented to send the candle to New York on the Global Initiative's behalf. Swiss president Flavio Cotti lit the Swiss peace candle with the "Torch of Hope".
For World Peace Day, Sept. 1996, a committee of the Global Initiative, mostly young people, was invited to the UN in New York in order to present the candle. They also brought 20000 signatures from around the globe asking for disarmament.
Since then, the World Peace Candle is waiting at the UN headquarters to be lit.
We, the world community, urgently wish that these weapons may be abolished. The lighting of the candle will symbolize a new era of peace and the beginning of total disarmament. We want to see the candle lit during our life time!
So let's sign this petition! It will be sent to many governments worldwide!
We, the undersigned, ask you, the political leaders of our planet, to actively propel nuclear disarmament.
