Detroit Police, Modify Your Equipment To Prevent Accidental Shootings!

The accidental shooting and death of a young woman, not yet 25, makes it clear that the Detroit Police need to examine all their deadly weapons for safety and better train officers on how to handle guns on and off duty.

An off-duty Detroit police officer's holstered Smith and Wesson discharged while he was dancing with Adaisha Miller and killed her. The problem seems to be that this standard-issue police weapon has a soft holster and no external safety.

"It should never have happened to my child," Adaisha's mother told the Detroit News.

Tell the Detroit Police to review the safety of all their standard-issue weapons, issue guns with external safeties and secure holsters, and train their officers on handling of weapons when off duty!

We the undersigned are saddened to learn of the senseless death of Adaisha Miller, a young woman whose mother is in deep mourning over her loss.

It appears Adaisha was the victim of a tragic accident involving an off-duty police officer and a gun that was not well enough secured. The Smith and Wesson's lack of a safety and soft holster are implicated. Your department should carefully review and reconsider whether such equipment is appropriate for police officers who routinely carry their guns off duty. It's also worth discussing whether off-duty police officers should carry guns during social interactions such as dancing.

Please modify your equipment to make sure that what happened to Adaisha never happens again!
