ABIM should recall the recent changes to Maintenance of Certification (MOC)

ABIM has changed the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements. As of 2014 to be in compliance with MOC, physicians must sign up for a complex system requiring they complete modules every 2 years and pay significantly higher fees. The value of this increased physician workload and cost has not been established.

We believe:

 1) ABIM has made unreasonable changes in MOC requiring more frequent participation and higher fees

2) Scientific data indicating MOC provides benefit is lacking

3) Via either our personal experience with MOC or the experience of our colleagues with MOC, we believe the module portion of MOC has negligible value.

4) A test administered every ten years to candidates who do not have grandfathered certification is a sufficient metric for MOC.

5) Therefore, we call on ABIM to recall the changes in MOC and institute a simple pathway consisting of a test every ten years.
