Ban Hunting of the Giant Anteater

  • by: Animal Advocates
  • recipient: Bolivia President Evo Morales, Bolivia Ministry of Planning and Development

Native to Central and South America, the giant anteater is listed as a vunerable species, even though it is now extinct in many of its former ranges. Between 2000 and 2010 the total population declined by 30 percent.

The giant anteater is facing extinction the the Amazon Rainforest from human induced threats such as habitat destruction, collision with vehicles, and attacks by dogs. It is particularly vunerable to fires because of its flammable coat and slow movement. The animals thick leathery hide is used to make horse equipment in Chaco. In Venezuela, it is hunted for its foreclaws. It is commonly hunted in Bolivia for sport.

We ask Bolivia to protect the vunerable giant anteater and stop hunting it as sport. Its importance in the environment is very necessary and with extinction looming, it is time to stop killing them for sport. The responsible thing to do would be to set aside protected areas.
