Not getting the right hours at work? Are you struggling to make ends meet? READ ME!!!!

If we get 100,000 signatures on HM Petition website, it may be discussed at the house of commons, please search under underemployment.

      • 3 Million people in the UK are now currently under-employed Not getting enough working hours This may look good for the government as unemployment rates are falling, but this means people not knowing how much they will get paid month to month and for those of us on Working Tax Credits needing to work compulsary hours, we may see our benefits cut if hours are dropped.

I am currently unemployed and in my search for employment have noticed the following requirements which could cause financial problems for everyone and certainly childcare problems for families.

      • 0-8 hour contracts, requiring full flexibility as and when needed.

      • Positions advertised for a set amount of hours, but require you to be available full time.

      • Expect you to be available to work any 5 day out of seven

      • Not allowed to take a second job as they require full flexibility.

      • Having a child makes you inflexible.

I understand that businesses are trying to control their head count and fluctuating staff requirement costs, but they are running a business, surely they have enough historical information on their business to adequately prepare for busy/quieter periods? Also, if managers are unable to correctly compile a rota, surely they shouldn't have the position?

Changes that could be made

      • Clear advertisement for required hours (no hidden agendas or false advertisement

      • Job Shares (for parents/students requiring PT hours)

      • Better management of rotas and business requirements

      • Mix of FT & PT staff (not just managers FT)

      • A contract is a two way agreement, employers should have to stick to it too and not expect staff to work overtime permanently or have hours dropped when you have consecutively worked more.

      • Fair working policies for parents & no discrimination at interview stage.

Jobsharing is a fantastic way to provide flexibility for the staff and the business, 2 staff members may have smaller contracts, but able to work extra hours with notice to cover sickness/holiday/busy periods.

There are many people requiring both FT and PT work, a mix of the two within staffing requirements could prove beneficial to everyone. The PT staff may be able to be flexible.

The only beneficiaryare the employers, under-employment is not good for the employee, who undoubtedly will struggle to afford to make ends meet.
