MBTA Youth Pass NOW: NOT ANOTHER STUDENT HIKE!

The MBTA is a LIFELINE for youth. Currently, 1/3 of Boston’s youth are stranded from school, work, healthcare, extracurriculars, and safe travel because they can’t afford the MBTA. The T must immediately address the affordability crisis for youth riders by implementing a Youth Pass. The Youth Pass should be $10/month for bus & train, have no time or day restrictions, and be available for purchase by any youth between 12-21 years old.

Schools will be stronger with higher attendance. Transit workers will no longer have conflicts with teens over pennies, and can build better relationships with youth riders. Parents can stop worrying about paying for safe travel. There will be higher participation in workforce training, community service, GED classes, arts, sports, and more. More teens will become lifelong riders. A Youth Pass would mean an improvement for our city, our youth, and everyone who knows a teenager or cares about young people.

Youth fought for revenue to stabilize the MBTA, and the T has a responsibility to use some of that revenue to create equity in the system. Everyone benefits when youth have the opportunity to learn, work, thrive, and contribute. The time for the Youth Pass is now.

The MBTA can’t raise fares on students AGAIN when the affordability crisis hasn’t been solved yet: Boston’s youth are already stranded from school, work, extracurriculars, & critical healthcare appointments because they can’t afford the fares.

MassDOT and the MBTA must immediately address the Youth Rider Crisis:

- protect student fares from 2014 hikes (either by exempting student fares entirely, or adding weekends to the current $25 pass)
- begin a Youth Pass Pilot by July 2014 [consisting of 5,000 youth from across the Boston region & lasting 6-12 months],
- make the $10 Youth Pass available for purchase to all youth ages 12-21, no time or day restrictions (works nights, weekends, summertime) real NOW.

A Youth Pass would mean an improvement for our city, our youth, and everyone who knows a teenager or cares about young people.
