Demand justice for an 'overworked' family of dolphins kept in cramped conditions at a marine park

A family of dolphins at a marine park in Australia - including a 45-year-old dolphin called Bucky, are being overworked and kept in a pool which is 20% smaller than it should be.

The dolphins' 'work' schedule at the Dolphin Marine Magic in Coffs Harbour has increased from two shows a day to three in peak periods. The dolphins are also subjected to a disturbing amount of human interaction - being trained to swim, hug and push people through the pool.

An online petition started last year prompted an investigation into conditions at the marine park by the Department of Primary Industries.

However, a complaint has now been lodged with corruption watchdog - the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) - as the Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson, is alleged to have received free passes to the marine park the same month directors of the park discussed compliance issues with ministers.

Ms Hodgkinson says she declared the gift and that her visit was as Assistant Minister for Tourism.

Meanwhile, the Department of Primary Industries will soon release its findings from the inquiry into the marine park.

We ask that the government ensures the free passes received by Ms Hodgkinson have no effect on the findings from the inquiry. We also ask that the dolphins at the park receive better care, are kept in a larger pool and are not subjected to demeaning shows - they deserve to be treated with respect.
