India: Punish Village Headman Severely Who Ordered Rape of 13-Year-Old Girl!

Instead of calling authorities and making the brother accountable, this vicious man took matters into his own hands. What is worse is that so many witnessed the assault on the young girl and did nothing to help her.

In the small town of Swang Gulgulia Dhoura, India, a young man crept into the hut of a married woman after dark and groped her. It turns out that the woman was the daughter of the village headman. After the incident, when the whole village was aware of what occurred, several people witnessed this woman's husband drag the young man’s 13-year-old sister from her father’s hut and into the woods, where he raped her.

The worst thing, said the girl’s father, was that no one did anything to stop it. He stated that “My wife wept, but nobody listened. My daughter said, ‘Save me, save me,’ but nobody listened. All these people became blind when he was dragging my daughter away." It turns out that the village headman ordered the rape of this young girl. Many of the villagers heard the girl screaming but did nothing because, as they explained, “We did not know he was going to rape her.” The girl limped back to her family’s hut 45 minutes later, and then set out on the hour long walk to the nearest police station.                

Such assaults and the way they are handled is very common in these remote villages in India. Mr. Ghosal Pasi, 45, the village headsman was arrested on suspicion of ordering the rape, and his son-in-law, Nakabandi Pasi, on suspicion of rape. The girl’s brother, Harendra Pasi, is in custody, on suspicion of assaulting the married woman, Ms. Devi. Other villagers stated, regarding their local police and justice that “There is a practice here, to sort out matters themselves. After speaking to some of the women, they said if something like this will happen in our village again we will oppose it. But when the girl tried to seek help from people, they turned away their faces. That’s the fact."

Although all those involved in these assaults have been arrested and are in custody, we want to ensure that they and this village headsman is severely punished for these acts.
