Plastic bag consumption in Kingston contributes to landfills and pollution.

Ban Plastic Bags in Kingston, ON!

Target:
City of Kingston
Sponsored by:
The movement to ban plastic shopping bags may not seem that revolutionary, but it is and Kingston can be one of the first cities to do this. San Francisco was the first city to ban plastic bags and other countries have since implemented bag tax (Ireland), a cost for bags (China, Israel, Australia) or have begun using biodegradable bags. I move to completely ban plastic bags from major retailers, shopping markets, pharmacies etc. in order to address the issue of consumption. Although anything helps, by banning the bags and forcing people to use reusable ones, we are changing peoples habits and that is the ultimate goal. So who's with me?

We the undersigned ask that the city of Kingston, ON address the issue of plastic bag manufacturing and pollution by banning plastic bags in large supermarkets and retailers. The issue of consumption is the underlying problem and we feel that banning plastic bags will force shoppers to change their habits and use reusable bags. The city of Kingston has many environmental initiatives and we hope that this will be added to the list of positive ways that the city of Kingston has helped its community.

Plastic bags are a nuisance to our environment, not only are they littering up the land fills but our oceans, forests, and back yards! With so many other alternatives to the wasteful plastic bag we should stop producing them!! This would be one more step in helping the environment.

When we have a floating section of our oceans that is filled with plastic and trash, that is roughly the size of a state (!) then it is time to ban something. Of course, paper creates more waste than plastic - but at least it falls apart in water.

This is a start! Whole Foods now no longer uses plastic bags. I also believe that all plastic in this country should be recyclable and biodegradable. Every plastic wrapper around a product, every plastic lid or cap, every plastic bag! That would be brilliant!
