Establish a Native American Holiday

Target:
to finally give recognition to the ORIGINAL NATIVES OF THIS COUNTRY!!!
Sponsored by:
Isn't it strange that of all the holidays on the calendar there isn't one representing the Native Americans?
It's about time that changed, instead of celebrating Columbus in October why don't we honor a Native American?

Recently some friends and I where having a prideful discussion on facebook about how this country was founded on Christianity and therefore nobody had better mess with our precious Christian Holiday. Yep we where talking about Christmas. And the discussion went further to include our Christmas tree symbol. There was a rumor going around that president Obama was going to call the whitehouse "christmas" tree a "holiday" tree instead. Christian pride was so thick you could cut it with a knife. No one is going to call our Christmas tree a holiday tree! As it turns out this was just a rumor started by the republican rumor machine and president Obama had no intention of calling the tree a holiday tree. But after much thought I was faced with an inconvenient truth. If you think about it the true symbol of the rightful owners of this country would be a totem pole....lol Certainly not a Christmas tree. And then it hit me! When we make our "prideful" claims as to how this country was "founded on Christianity" to do so is also to admit that the theft of an of an entire continent and the slaughter of millions of "native" american men, women and children was also part of that "Christian" founding narrative. Funny how during our entire discussion in which we where defending our precious Christmas tree no one had even mentioned that we have not one holiday in this great christian nation of ours that pays tribute to native americans and their beliefs and symbols. That we could even be so concerned as to whether it be called a holiday tree or a Christmas tree when native americans have not but one official holiday of their own just goes to show you that Christianity is not very good at fostering "grace". In fact I must say that only a religion totally void of grace could celebrate columbus day in the faces of American indians on their own soil. That being said I set out on the internet to see if I could find out why there was no official native american holiday....and so here I am. As for the native americas on this site I ask for your grace and forgiveness. As from what I have seen you have a greater capacity as to both of these virtues or traits compared to most of my Christian friends.

Hallelujah!!!! A National Federally recognized holiday in honor of the brave Native Americans of all nations and tribes that sacrificed their lives and ways. I have Native American on both sides of my family and it's sad that we don't know as much of our Native American heritage as we should. All Americans should be taught of the Native American ways, they are the foundation of this country and if we adpoted their ways we wouldn't have so much waste, pollution and health issues.

Treat the people that gave the white man a place to call theirs with respect. We are the only minority that is required to carry a "green card" on our own native lands

As an elder of native heritage it is paramount that we have a holiday of our own. I would like to see this accomplished in my lifetime. We say this is a country of freedom and equality, then we should practice what we preach. If not for us then for the next seven generations, The youngest generation is watching!

We Natives always get the crap, even our supposed history month is not celebrated or used to educate children in schools and is during the month w/ the holiday that celebrates our demise, our political issues as well as basic rights and needs are ignored, atleast give us a national holiday.

why not honor this day as Columbus meets the Chief day.Remember that Columbus wrote the king and queen of Spain(his benefactors)"I have not met a more generous kind people etc."

After all of the injustices by the U.S. government to the "first" Americans, a holiday, at the least, is one step in restitution. After all, there are holidays for dead presidents and an "African" American hero.

celebrating columbus, as the first person who discovered this country, continues to make indigenious peoples invisible...which enables racism. it's about time we take time to rename this day to native american day. we need the wisdom, intuitiveness and tenacity of the first peoples today more than ever before.

Out of justice and reconcilliation, I feel we owe our First Countrymen and women the respect and honor they deserve. To not only set aside a day of honor but to ask their forgivness and that we become open to the wisdom and traditions of the Native American past.

I feel this would be a wonderful way of honoring our Native American people, they live closer to a Superior Being, than many of us do today, they acknowledge the spirit of all, animals, birds, humans. So why not honor them - in setting a holiday in their honor..

It is an honor to sign this petition. We will all benefit from a declared time of nationally honoring the people from whom we receive the gifts of Earth Wisdom, Consensus models of governance, and Circle Justice. From my time in Canada I know you, with deep respect, as "First Nations".

It would behoove a country whose existence is based upon the methodic removal and decimation of the its indigenous population to in some way recognize the sin and memorialize those descendants.

I think this is long over due!!!!!!! It's funny when you look at all the holidays that are celebrated in the United States and not even one of them gives note to the Native Americans. This was their land not ours....yet we came over and just pushed them out of the way. In all honesty I believe that the month of November should be Native American month!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am Tired of the "Black" Holidays in this Great Country. It is Black, Black, Black all month long and the Goverment thinks it is just a pitty to be Black. Well, we Native American Indians (I'm Cherokee) also think back to the day that our Country screwed the Indians back in the 1837-38 Era. Yes it is time to Officially announce a Special Holiday in Remembrance for thoes who struggled to survive the "Trail of Tears". Sincerely, Richard "River Walker" Fox
