Every year in the United States, there are a number of pets that are sold at the local pet store or pet shop. Many of these animals are exotic animals. Exotic animals are animals such as reptiles and birds.
Many people may ask the question, what does the exotic pet trade consists of? For starters, the trade is when the wild animals are taken from their native land and natural habitat and are literally held in captivity for domestic purposes, such as becoming domesticated pets. When these exotic animals are taken from the wild, not only the public health and safety are at stake, but so is the environment. The ecosystem is very dependent on these animals to pass on the plant seeds with the help of their dung and fur.
These animals suffer in a very devastating way. Often these exotic animals do not have the proper housing and the care and suffer from malnutrition. In addition to having malnutrition and inadequate housing, they are also mistreated and/or killed. Exotic animals live in these horrible conditions against their will. The young are taken away from their mothers soon after birth. The purpose: to be reared by the hand. This impact is a huge blow for the mother and the young. These animals are emotionally damaged for life. Some people, such as hunters, are paid a great amount of money just to aim a gun and take the life of a rare animal, at close range, just to receive a prize.

It is a shame that these exotic animals are treated like a piece of trash. They are treated like commodity. There are websites where the people can log on with a credit card and buy these animals. Or they have an option to purchase them at different auction sites throughout the United States.

This is a very illegal animal trade. The illegal trafficking with exotic animals is a worldwide business is approximately $20 billion annually.

The majority of states have laws concerning the ownership restriction of exotic animals. The exotic pet trade needs to end. We can do this if we let our voices be heard, because these poor animals cannot speak for themselves.

We have to be the voice for them!
