We not only need to stop inshore trawling, we need to get all nets out of our nursery creeks and marshes! The waste of juvenile finfish is just a part of the problem. The commercial value of all NC redfish landings is only about 5% of their recreational value. Until now our DMF has never been able to enforce quotas on redfish landings within 25% overage.

Our stocks can no longer support the pressure from Pollution and loss of habitat.... and scince no one can stop the almighty dollar/development juggernaut.. then limiting pressure is the least we can do... when I see all the fish wasted by dumpass netters rotting in the sun I want to cry!!

Take a look at the traditional way, Maldivians still fish today in order to keep the livestock constant. It is enough to feed us all and to export some too. Learn to maintain a healthy live stock of fish first, before you start robbing future generations of their food.

Imagine reaching for an apple on a tree and having your hand suddenly impaled by a metal hook that drags you—the whole weight of your body pulling on that one hand—out of the air and into an atmosphere in which you cannot breathe. This is what fish experience when they are hooked for “sport.” Many people grow up fishing without ever considering the terror and suffering that fish endure when they’re impaled by a hook and pulled out of the water. Recreational anglers rarely stop to contemplate that fish are complex and intelligent individuals. In fact, if anglers treated cats, dogs, cows, or pigs the way they treat fish, they would be thrown in prison on charges of cruelty to animals. Even when anglers put fish back in the water after torturing them, many of the fish die from their stress and injuries. A 2006 study conducted during and after a Wisconsin fishing tournament found that hundreds of fish who were caught and released had died within a few days.

Having grown up on the coast and fished the waters in/around Morehead City/Atlantic Beach for years, I have seen first hand what irresponsible recreational and commercial fishing have done to our fishery in this area. I have seen the number of fish (all species) decline and the quality of those fish decline as well. If something is not done to stop they way our fishery is being managed, there soon won't be any fish. I encourage EVERYONE to support this effort. What many do not realize is that while the commercial fishermen rely on our fishery to make a living, they are putting themselves out of work by the practices that many of them have. And irresponsible recreational fisherman are just as much at fault for the way things are now. the practices of setting nets in internal waters and trawling internal waters need to be heavily scrutinized!!

I have done alot of fishing around the crystal coast and have seen a slow deterioration of the variety and size of the fish. There must be some compromise as to ensure future generations the enjoyment of fishing as we have experienced.

Inshore nets have to go ! There are many better ways to produce a pound of fish or shrimp without all the destruction . The state would not let you cut down the forest to harvest all the deer ! Just because all the damage is under the water where you cant see it doesent mean its not there !
