Thousands of animals roam the streets of Puerto Rico searching for food. Many die every day. Help SAFAPR save them.

Sign to Support Renewal of SAFAPR Sanctuary Contract

Target:
University of Puerto Rico (RUM); Mayoral Offices of Cabo Rojo/Mayaguez
Sponsored by:
The lease of Santuario de Animales San Francisco de Asis has EXPIRED. This is home to more than 100 dogs and cats, who have no place to go.

This lease MUST be renewed ASAP, to ensure the animals have a safe home. There are NO other shelters in Puerto Rico with the capacity to take on more animals and the ONLY option would be to send them to the streets or have them euthanized.

SAFAPR is a 100% NO-KILL Shelter. Euthanization is NOT an acceptable solution.

SAFAPR has demonstrated success and has helped send almost 30 dogs to adoptive homes in the United States, just in the last few months, in coordination with Defensores de Animales. We are making a difference. We must continue our efforts. Please enable us to do so with your support.

MAJOR ISSUE: The University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (RUM) now owns the land the Sanctuary is located on. However, since 2004 they have yet to fulfill requests for renewal.

This petition has 4 goals:

#1 - Pledge your support and ask for the renewal of the SAFAPR lease to the administration of the University of Puerto Rico (RUM).

#2 - Pledge your support and ask for the support and direct intervention in the negotiations from the Mayor's Office of Cabo Rojo & the Mayor's Office of Mayaguez.

#3 - Pledge your support for Law 154: Welfare and Protection of Animals in Puerto Rico.

#4 - Pledge that you say "No" to the abuse and neglect of animals in Puerto Rico.

SAFAPR is ready to make improvements with the help of time & donations from the volunteer & business communities. But we need to know our animals' home is secure.

Please digitally sign below to indicate your support & help us achieve our goals. But ultimately help to save the animals of Puerto Rico.

Thank-you in advance for your support and caring!

  • We say "No" to the abuse and neglect of animals in Puerto Rico.
  • We say "Yes" to enforcement of Law 154 for the Welfare & Protection of Animales in Puerto Rico.
As citizens and voters of Puerto Rico, we strongly request the support of this cause & request direct action be taken by the Mayors of both Cabo Rojo & Mayaguez in support of SAFAPR.org as representatives to the Santuario de Animales San Francisco de Asis.

I would love to see my alma mater, UPR Mayaguez, step up to the challenge as a leading community entity and renew the SAFAPR lease as a minimum. Ideally I would like to see "el Colegio" team up with other campuses with veterinary schools and also help out with volunteer personnel. We can do it - after all, our mascot is a bulldog!

Antes, Ahora, y Siempre - Colegio.

Im against animal abuse, animals are our friends, in other words living beings and just because they dont speak the way we do does'nt mean they dont deserve love, respect and care! Some animals that arrive in shelters dont even get a second chance...please people we have to help!

Everything has to change not only in Puerto Rico, but everywere if you adopt an animal right there and then you promised to give it a shelter, to feed it, to take care of it, to be their friend... All people view animals differently some just see them as guards to their homes, others see them as something to feel supirior to and others see them as life long friends. Everyone should learn to value all life.

Of course I will.

There is no excuse for inhumane treatment of any living being. Lack of concern for animals shows lack of concern for people and leads to an unthinkable future.

NO ABUSE IS TOLERABLE ANYWHERE.

The renewal of the SAFAPR Sanctuary Contract is vital and urgent. It is vital not only for all the animals it saves, but also to improve the image of Puerto Rico as a commonwealth that cares. I am Puerto Rican and it is very distressing to see documentaries that depict Puerto Rico as an uncaring nation that has little regard for its domestic pet population. The renewal of the contract would allow the sanctuary to continue to provide care and humane treatment of helpless animals, and hopefully, result in the widespread education and enlightenment on the importance of domestic animals in our lives as loving pets and companions who deserve humane treatment and care. It would also serve to improve Puerto Rico's image as a commonwealth that recognizes the importance of, and that cares about its domestic animal population.

I went to my country, the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, a few years ago. I was extremely embarrassed by the abuse and neglect of animals, not to mention the ignorance of the people as it relates to this living creatures. I was ashamed to see my husband (an American) be a witness of this injustice and to know that for decades the situation has not changed... and the government does not care. Tourism, an important industry that supports thousands of Puerto Ricans. Tourists, the people who take home of a very ugly impression of our island. I, for one, born and raised a ponceña, have no plans to return any time soon. The situation upset me very much and I came home with a heavy heart. What do you think the tourists think? I know for a fact that there are many who feel like me and will not return although they loved the beauty of the island and the Puerto Rican people. Wake up. Take care of our own--that includes the most vulnerable, our helpless and abused animals. Save the sanctuary. It is NOT a luxury. it is a necessity, it is a moral obligation as human beings. Having it shows your humanity.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.".
