Stop Proposed Bear Hunting Lottery Aimed at Curbing State Population

Connecticut state officials say the lottery to open a hunt on bears is meant to help control a bear population that’s getting dangerously out of hand. This is not a necessary means by which to control the population. Many alternative, more humane options are available and should be exercised BEFORE open season is declared.
We the undersigned are writing you to petition NOT establishing a lottery to allow bear hunting within the state of Connecticut. Declaring open season on bears to purportedly curb their burgeoning population is an unnecssary and cruel means by which to control their numbers. Numerous more humane tactics, such as tranquilizing and relocating bears, by trained animal control officers should be the first means by which population control is addressed. To open a lottery against these bears surely allows "trophy hunters" the opportunity to get over zealous. Please do not develop a lottery to permit such inhumane actions within the borders of our state. Thank you.
