Stop the inhumane deportation of Jerry

Jerry (Home Office no. K1216833) has been held in immigration removal centres in the UK for almost 2 years. He is now faced with deportation back to Zimbabwe, despite that country’s political volatility. For Jerry in particular, deportation to Zimbabwe is incredibly risky.

At 18 years old Jerry was forced to join Mugabe's Green Bomber youth militia where he was tortured for refusing to harm civilians, and forced to witness indescribable horrors. After a few years he managed to escape and come to England where he has lived now for almost 10 years. During this time he has suffered from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, haunted by flashblacks, periods of severe terror, and insomnia. Several years ago, Jerry was convicted of ABH and common assault, for which he served his prison sentence (followed by 2 years incarcerated in detention) and has felt constant, deep remorse for ever since.

As an escaped member of Mugabe's youth militia, Jerry is considered a political enemy of the Zimbabwe African Nation Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF). This means that if removed to Zimbabwe, there is a very real danger that Jerry will face being tortured or killed. The current instability in Zimbabwe makes it a dangerous place for anyone to be deported to. However for Jerry the risks are even greater. The forthcoming elections and resulting road blocks mean that it is impossible to travel any distance without presenting an ID card – this means that for Jerry, once in Zimbabwe, his whereabouts will be known to the authorities.

In sum, deporting Jerry back to Zimbabwe would be in breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 - quite simply removing his right to life, liberty and security of person.

I urge you to sign this petition, to prevent this injustice. The message is simple - no human should be knowingly put at risk of torture or death, no matter which country they may have been born in or what crimes they may have committed in the past. If you agree, please sign for Jerry and forward the petition to everyone you know.
