Tell the FDA: If it has hydrogenated oil it HAS trans fats

Target:
President Obama & FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg
Sponsored by:
Trans fats are a public health menace.

Trans fat is created when food manufacturers make liquid vegetable oils solid by adding hydrogen (hence the name hydrogenated oil). Unfortunately, this process changes the natural structure of the oil, making it harmful to our bodies. A wealth of research has shown that consuming trans fat significantly increases your risk of cardiovascular disease by raising your total and LDL cholesterol (the bad kind), and possibly decreasing your HDL cholesterol (the good kind). Eating trans fat-loaded foods also increases belly fat, a sign of metabolic syndrome.

So how can labels promise 0 grams trans fat when the food has hydrogenated oils? The reason lies in the rules set forth by the FDA. When a product contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving, the number on the nutrition label can be rounded down to zero. But this doesn't make the product free of trans fat. If you eat just one serving, even the FDA would have to admit you%u2019re consuming trans fat.

Tell the FDA that even .01g hydrogenated oil MUST require the trans fats to be listed as 1g!

That half gram per serving is still there. If you eat just one serving, even the FDA would have to admit you%u2019re consuming trans fat. Couple that little sleight of hand with the fact that most Americans routinely eat more than the suggested serving size, and you%u2019ve got two important reasons to choose your foods wisely.

Please change your rules to require showing 1g of trans fats whenever less than 1g is present.

WE NEED TO BE TRUE TO THE PEOPLE AND REGAIN THE HONESTY IN FOODS. MONEY WILL STILL BE MADE, AND THE PEOPLE WILL ADJUST TO THE PRICES.

Why do you continue to allow the sales of hydrogenated oils when studies show it's harmful impact on the human body? And even .01 g of hydrogenated oil in a food means it INCLUDES trans fat. So why can small amounts just be ignored? It should be banned completely. Email me back, I'm interested in your opinion...

Hydrogenated oils should be banned from use. Barack Obama wants preventive health care. It could and should start by the ban of this awfully harmful substance in most prepared foods.

If hydrogenated oil is in food, it is toxic.

I'm tired of the food processing companies using the population as Guinea pigs in their continual experimentation with exotic food manipulations and additives. Most substances that we didn't evolve with over millions of years have a potential harmful effect on our metabolism simply because our chemical processes haven't evolved a method of dealing with them yet since they have just been invented and introduced to our diets ove the last few years or decades. It takes a relatively long time for natural selection to week out or adapt to new substances in the environment which usually just arise gradually and piecemeal in the nature whereas industrial processes flood us with new subastances every year that have the potential to overwhlem our natural systems. The FDA should recognize this and act accordingly. All the chemical and food industries care about is pleasing their stockholders. Since I can't see us discarding our capitalist system in the near future baring a major collapse that can't rescue this cancerous system, it's up to the FDA as the duly constituted watch dog for the American people to limit the impact of the big industries on our health and well being.
