Selecting a New Commencement Speaker for 2017 South Carolina State University Graduates

SCSU Graduating Seniors as well as family and friends feel as though they are being short changed with the speaker that was chosen for them for their graduating ceremony. On behalf of the graduating class they feel as though this selection was not thought out throughly and Seniors are requesting a NEW Speaker. Someone whom they can connect with.

This petition is in no way, shape or form intended to make anyone feel like they are not welcome at South Carolina State University. The objective of the petition is to simply make the facility, students, and community aware of the concern in the selection of the commencement speaker for the graduating senior class. This is certainly not because of race or any political stand point. It is only to shed light about how students feel that they need a speaker who can relate more to the HBCU experiences, struggles as well as triumphs and life of an HBCU student in general. A speaker is needed that understands the hard work and the value of an HBCU. The graduating class needs a speaker that will uplift them and give them hope that after they receive their degree; letting them know anything is possible because it has been proven. So, do not make this about the Governor, he is  definitely welcome on this campus, but maybe for another time or another event held in the future. We here at South Carolina State University appreciate and send our warmest thank you for everything that the Governor has done for our school and his support. This petition intentions are not to be viewed as anything negative directed towards our Governor, but simply requesting that we have a speaker that shares more common ground with it's students.
