Businesses in NC Need to be Educated on Laws Regarding Service Dogs & Veterans

Thank you for signing and sharing yet another petition regarding the refusal of service to an individual with a service dog present.  This individual is a veteran from Viet Nam suffering with PTSD and was turned away from a favored restaurant because people complained.  Shame on them; This guy served our country but was not allowed to sit for a meal because of his dog, necessary for his well-being.  Though the restaurant owner apologized, staff needs to establish rules for anyone entering with their service animal.

Lacy Miller is a veteran who served in Viet Nam, and currently suffers with PTSD.  Recently, he went to a local favorite restaurant, Mickey's Cafe in Kernersville with his grandson and his dog. The owner of the cafe', Ms. Smith asked the veteran to leave because he was not handicapped, blind or deaf. Mr. Miller ordered food and left the establishment. Only there for a few seconds, a cashier also asked him to leave. Mr. Miller stated "I was upset. Actually half upset, half hurt, half whatever."

This is such poor treatment of one of our veterans! However, the man's wife called Ms. Smith to inform her of the law that was passed for veterans that allowed her husband to have his service dog in the cafe. She directed Smith on which website to go to find the law. Subsequently, Ms. Smith admitted she was flat out wrong and made a full apology. Businesses such as this need to be more fully aware of the laws regarding service dogs and not put other patrons through such humiliation.  This should not have happened to this poor guy who already gave his life for his country and just enjoy a meal with his grandson and service dog. Owner of Mickey's Cafe in Kernersville, NC - It is honorable that you have made efforts to make amends with Mr. Miller, the ex-veteran who was refused service because of his service dog.  However, you need to take further steps to ensure such an incident doesn't happen again, humiliating and disrespecting especially our great veterans who have given their lives for us.  Be sure to educate all your staff in your establishment plus other businesses nearby.  This man was crushed to be treated this way when there is a law against such treatment of veterans when entering any business with a service dog.  These people deserve respect. Your staff needs to be trained accordingly.
