Horses are not vicious animals!

The CT Supreme Court has recently ruled that horses are vicious animals. This is lunacy.  Horses are the opposite of vicious. This comes in respose to parents who filed a lawsuit after their child was bitten by a horse.  One: horses bite - so do dogs, cats, parrots, hamsters, people, and many, many more. I would not expect all dogs to be labled vicious because dogs have bitten people.  Why would they rule this way with horses?  Two: the child was left by its parents to run willy-nilly unsupervised around a stable which is extreme negligence on their part. What affect will this ruling have?  It could lead to people filing suits to be allowed to slaughter horses to use this in their arguments and it could leave the SAFE act to wither and die.

Horses are not vicious.  I've been a horse person for 42 years.  I was in a saddle before I could walk.  I've had my fair share of injuries.  It's just as expected as racing a dirt bike around a track or snowboarding in a half-pipe.  The difference is that when dealing with horses is that they are prey animals that need to be a partner and need to trust us.  They are not objects to be thrown away if an injury occurs.  Also, horses play key roles in the lives of humans.  Not only are they ridden and driven for sport, but they are still used to herd livestock and are companion animals. They are also used in therapy program for people with mental and physical disabilities, for our wounded warriors, and more.  They enrich our lives in ways that cannot be explained in a couple of paragraphs.

It is of the upmost importance that this ruling be thrown out.

Update #110 years ago
Recent press reports indicate that the members of Connecticut’s House of Representatives want to make it perfectly clear that they don’t believe horses are inherently vicious; a definitive response to a recent Connecticut state court ruling.

By a unanimous vote of 138-0, the House on Thursday passed legislation clarifying Connecticut law by saying domesticated horses are not wild animals and therefore are not inherently dangerous.

The bill now moves to the Senate.
