Don't Let the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Orphan Calf Moose

  • by: Pamela Rubenick

In Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is imposing a limited calf moose hunt to try to increase the population. Calf will be only opened for 2 weeks and then only adults will be allowed to be hunted - including their mothers! This will result in an overwhelming number of orphaned calf moose.

Even though calves are larger by fall, size does not compensate for a protective mother. They will be vulnerable to predation and aggression. In their first winter orphaned calves are 8 to 47 times more likely to face aggression from other adult moose. This results in physical abuse from the cows (a cow moose will not adopt an orphaned calf) and they are run out of optimal feeding areas forcing them to live off less nutritious foods or starve. Orphaned calves are 8 times less likely to survive their first year than those with mothers which puts their survival rate at about 25%!

We can't allow this to happen! This "strategy" will put the moose in a weakened and horrible situation. We make a stand against all kinds of animal cruelty!

Please also contact the Minister of Natural Resources (Bill Mauro) and the Peterborough MNR and urge them to throw out this proposition!

We the signed are opposed to the restricted two week calf hunt. This will result in an overwhelming number of orphaned calves. Even though calves are larger by fall, size does not compensate for a protective mother. In their first winter orphaned calves are 8 to 47 times more likely to face aggression from other adult moose. This results in physical abuse from the cows ( a cow moose will not adopt an orphaned calf) and they are run out of optimal feeding areas forcing them to live off less nutritious foods or starve. Orphaned calves are 8 times less likely to survive their first year than those with mothers.

There is more evidence showing this proposition is more inhumane and abusive than beneficial. We urge the OMNR to do away with this cruelty and impose something more humane. Consider habitat creation, deer deterrents, no antlerless hunting, or allow a cow tag only to tag a cow or calf.

We the signed urge the OMNR to scrap this imposition!
Update #19 years ago
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has put in the 2 week calf moose season for 2015. We need to fight to protect these majestic animals from becoming weakened. The MNRs new regulation will leave an overwhelming number of calves without their mothers. I am not ready to give up and am asking for help from all you wonderful people. Please share this petition, sign it, or spread the word! unfortunately time is running out - faster than I thought.
Thank you
Pam
