Tell President Obama to Pardon Edward Snowden!

Whistleblower and ex-defense contractor Edward Snowden did a great service to the American people when he revealed the global surveillance programs being conducted on U.S. citizens by the National Security Agency (NSA).

Please sign this petition to ask President Obama to use his powers to pardon Edward Snowden.

Thanks to Snowden, we now know U.S. officials lied about the massive, bulk collection of data. We know the government ordered Verizon to hand over telephone data to the NSA on a daily basis. We know the NSA tapped directly into the servers of companies including Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo to spy on communications.

We know innocent citizens were caught in the NSA's dragnet, meaning the daily lives of more than 10,000 people were catalogued and recorded. The NSA didn't "just" collect metadata as initially thought -- intimate chats, photos, documents and emails from innocent people were also recorded.

Privacy in online communications is of utmost importance. Without it, citizens fail to speak out about injustices. They self-censor what they read, the websites they visit, what they write in emails and texts. Mass surveillance has a chilling effect on our lives and free expression.

Snowden remains in Russia and faces three charges under the Espionage Act. If he returned to the U.S., he would almost certainly be thrown in jail for decades, despite the great service he did to the American public.

In his last term, Obama has stepped up for those adversely affected by the criminal justice system, commuting the sentences of 46 people in prison on drug offenses. Pardons are quite easy for a president to accomplish -- they require no approval from Congress and are not subject to judicial review.

"Arguing that you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." - Edward Snowden
We the undersigned urge you to pardon Edward Snowden, who did a great service to the American people by revealing the nonconsensual bulk collection of data conducted by U.S. authorities on innocent citizens. Privacy in online communications is of utmost importance.Without it, citizens fail to speak out about injustices. They self-censor what they read, the websites they visit, what they write in emails and texts. Mass surveillance has a chilling effect on our lives and free expression. Please consider using your powers to pardon Edward Snowden, who risked so much in order to keep the authority and sweeping powers of the U.S. government transparent -- a key facet of any functioning democracy. Thank you.
Update #17 years ago
A Norwegian court just denied Snowden the chance to travel there to accept a free speech award! Norway is part of NATO and allied with the U.S. Please continue to speak up for Snowden's freedom by sharing this petition on Facebook! http://bit.ly/28YMwNI
