Currently, school bus services aren't being provided to 6th grade students unless they live at least a mile and a half away from the school. Also, students in grades 7 and beyond aren't allaren't allowed school bus service no matter how far away from school they live. For this reason, we have children as young as 11 years old traveling alone on public transportation. Many of these children have cross the most busy city streets, facing rush hour traffic every morning in order to get to the bus stop our train station where they often ride on over crowded buses and trains. Furthermore, not enough is being done to provide for the safety of these children. During the times when children will be traveling to and from school; there isn't enough MBTA police presence on the buses and trains,there is not enough police presence on the streets, there aren't crossing guards to help children cross dangerous streets. We need our school buses back.
