Jonathan's Law - A 52 week bereavement leave for parents.

The death of a child is one of the most painful events that an adult can experience, it is linked to complicated and traumatic grief reactions.

For parents, a child’s death can result in severe anxiety and other negative emotions associated with loss.

A child's death precipitates a severe crisis of meaning as the death represents an unnatural departure from the order of life’s events.

The duration for parental grief is uncertain and can be expected to show great variability.

Parents do not feel they are emotionally, mentally and perhaps even physically ready to return to the workplace.

For many parents the only solace is in associating with those who have suffered a similar loss, especially in the first months following the death.

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

WHEREAS: The death of a child is one of the most painful events that a person can experience. Parents whose child dies as a result of illness or injury do not have a statutory leave, nor job protection while taking a leave to recover from such a loss, in the province of Ontario.

We the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:

To pass Jonathan's Law (Employee Leave of Absence When Child Dies) 2016
