Demand that the FDA Make Mandatory Restrictions on Antibiotic use in livestock

Please sign and share this petition worldwide to demand mandatory restrictions on the use of antibiotics on livestock.  The Food and Drug Administration made a motion to phase out the use of antibiotics in animals whose meat is processed for food.

Many of the cattle, poultry and hog farmers who are producing meat for consumption use antibiotics regularly to ensure the health of the animals and to facilitate the production process.  The FDA is now asking that agencies enforce voluntary restrictions of the antibiotics which are the same drugs used for human infection.  As it turns out, any of the companies that voluntarily use the antibiotics in order to promote animal growth is strictly illegal.  Unless the FDA demands mandatory restrictions of these practices, livestock farmers and producers are going to continue injecting their animals with illegal antibiotics.

Continued exposure to antibiotics can lead to germs that survive stronger, so that they could withstand the drug the next time it is used. More than 23,000 people a year are dying from drug-resistant infections.   The biggest risk is from germs spread in hospitals, and it’s not clear how much of the problem is related to the use of drugs in meat. An FDA spoken stated that “We need to be selective about the drugs we use in animals and when we use them. Antimicrobial resistance may not be completely preventable, but we need to do what we can to slow it down."  This is a major health risk that needs to be addressed far beyond the recommendations of the FDA.

The major way to phase out the use of these illegal drugs on livestock is to demand mandatory restrictions of the antibiotics in all livestock.  The FDA is on the right track but they need to move forward with mandatory regulations. Please sign and share this petition worldwide to demand mandatory restrictions on the use of antibiotics on livestock.  They did not go far enough in resolving this issue, not only for the health and well-being of the animals but as a public health crisis as well.

FDA – Although you have made an attempt to stop the use of antibiotics on livestock for personal gain, and of course, money!  You must be aware that if you make your ruling against the use antibiotics on livestock voluntary, it will NOT STOP!!! Please ensure that you make this a MANDATORY restriction so that no one is allowed to ever use antibiotics on livestock!!
