The Dover School Board Must Respond to Racist Bullying Within our District

Dear Dover Union Free District School Board,

The events of last week have brought to light some serious concerns about racism within the school district.

We, the residents of this school district, request that members of the school board respond publicly with actions to be taken related to racist incidents described by Jody _______ in the aftermath of her mural being covered at the order of Superintendent Tierney. Superintendent Tierney's choice to cover this student's mural was disturbing for a number of reasons, particularly that it may leave the students who engage in racist bullying feeling that they are supported in these actions by the school’s administration. But with that damage already done, the concern at this moment is what actions will be taken by the school board and superintendent to dismantle the culture of racism and racist bullying within the school district that was revealed by this incident.

What mechanisms will be put in place to intervene when this type of racist bullying occurs? What pedagogical choices will be made to support students of color in feeling that they are represented within the curriculum? What professional development opportunities will be offered to teachers to support the development and implementation of an anti-racist curriculum?

We need the school board to speak out publicly to ensure that our voices are heard and actions will be taken.

    Yours,

Residents of Dover Union Free School District
