UK Parks: Stop Breeding White Lions for Our Entertainment!

  • by: Chris Wolverton

Two British wildlife parks -- Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire and the Wildlife Heritage Foundation in Kent -- have bred five white lion cubs in 2013. Though white lions look beautiful, they are typically inbred and suffer from severe health problems and high mortality rates. For this reason, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums has ruled there is no conservation value in keeping white lions.

As though breeding the lions weren't bad enough, the zoos have taken them from a South African farm linked to canned hunting, and charge patrons 250 pounds (about 386 dollars) to pet the cubs, which is unnatural and dangerous.

The purpose of zoos is to educate patrons about wild animals and their behavior, not to create fantasy creatures to be cuddled and petted for human amusement. Please sign the petition to urge Paradise Wildlife Park and the Wildlife Heritage Foundation to stop breeding white lions!

We, the undersigned, are concerned about the alleged unethical breeding of white lions at your park. Though white lions look beautiful, they are typically inbred and suffer from severe health problems and high mortality rates. For this reason, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums has ruled there is no conservation value in keeping white lions.

We are also concerned with your practice of charging patrons to pet the cubs, which is unnatural and dangerous.

The purpose of zoos is to educate patrons about wild animals and their behavior, not to create fantasy creatures to be cuddled and petted for human amusement. We respectfully urge you to stop breeding white lions at your parks. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
