We Are the 99%: Support the May Day Strike!

The Occupy Movement wants this May Day to be a day of inaction: a "General Strike." It's time, they say, for the 99% to remind the rest of the world just how much they matter. Will you join them?

Known as the revolutionary holiday of the nineteenth-century workers' movement, this historic spring day will hopefully wake the country out of its winter hibernation.

It will commemorate a day in 1886 when hundreds of thousands of Americans filled the streets of New York, Boston, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Chicago demanding an eight-hour work day. The demonstration was dubbed the “Second Declaration of Independence.”

Now Occupy is saying, in so many words, it’s time for a Third. One member told Metro the strike will give a large number of people an “opportunity to see what this country looks like when the 99 percent stand up and speak up,“ and hopefully what they see will cause them to “reflect on where we are as a country.”

Stand up, speak out and show your support for workers' rights.

We, the undersigned, support your May Day Strike and hope it will bring new enegy to the movement to reform America.

In honor of the day’s history, it might be a good opportunity to call for a raise in the minimum wage, as Ralph Nader has suggested.

It might also be a good day to remember Howard Zinn and reflect on what he had to say about such actions.

In one of his last published appeals before he died in 2010, Zinn wrote about how, throughout history, it's taken citizens' pressure on politicians to bring positive change.

Occupy, hold on to the dream. We thank you for what you do, and we support your movement and the May Day Strike.
