We Plead That Kalana Not Be Returned To The Vishnu Temple

Kalana the elephant has lived for years at the Dondra Sri Vishnu Devale in Sri Lanka, where he has been chained in one spot. He has been both abused and neglected. He has no protection from the weather, is not bathed or cleaned, and is not given enough food or water. The chain around one of his front legs became embedded into his skin, causing a terrible infection. With the help of many kind and caring individuals who fought on his behalf, he was finally taken from the temple to get treatment at the Ridiyagama Safari park. At the park Kalana was met by other elephants who immediately embraced him, and he wept tears of joy. It was assumed that he would stay at the safari park or be sent somewhere else to live, but in a cruel twist of fate, he is going to be returned to the temple. We are asking that he not be brought back to the very place that abused, neglected and caused his injury. There are other viable options where he will be properly taken care of.
