Six dead cows were found in the barn of Karl and Ann Nelson and four others were discovered in the barnyard along with a deceased hog in its pen where another living hog resided. According to Iowa County Sheriff Steve Michek, another 27 cows and a hog also lived at the farm in deplorable, emaciated condition. Sheriff Michek stated that “A veterinarian acknowledged that the animals were malnourished and needed to be monitored closely if they were to survive.”
The good news is that the Nelson’s are cooperating fully with authorities but claimed that they ran out of money in order to care for all the animals. Even under these circumstances, people do not want to give up their animals even if they cannot provide proper food and shelter. The barn also was full of manure, the animals’ stalls lacked proper bedding and there was no water for the animals in the barn when deputies arrived.
The Nelson’s rented the farm from an aunt but it appears that things got away from them. Sheriff Michek reported that Ms. Nelson still boarded horses and they were in good shape. However, some animal owners don’t understand the costs involvedin caring for their own animals, especially during harsh weather; yet they cannot bear to give them up for their own good.
There is no viable reason why these animals should have endured the neglect and cruelty that they did, with many of them losing their life. Iowa County, Wisconsin Law Enforcement and Judicial System – You need to severely punish Karl and Ann Nelson for the numerous counts of animal abuse with all the animals found dead on their property. They also need to be accountable for all the neglected, malnourished animals still residing on their farm! Despite their reasoning, there is no excuse for what authorities found when investigating the home of the animals. Punish these people to the fullest extent of the law and ban them from ever owning, working with or caring for another animal.
