My son Chris became a ward of the state when he was 19th--in 2002. He was placed in special education when he was 13th. He was tested for special ed when he was in the 4th grade. And he did well on the most or all of the tests. So, he didn't gualify for special ed. When he was 13th, he started doing strange things. Later he said he hear voices and see things. He was placed in special education. He was diagnosed with a mental illness, and he went into a mental hospital. Chris has been in the hospital more than once. I tried to get Chris services with Touchstones and Threshols. But they didn't want to give him services. A social worker from Thresholds said Chris didn't qualify for services because he had a mental illness. Her name was Lisa Burlingame. She said Thresholds is for people who have a develomental disibility--like autism. Touchstones did services for people with a mental illness. But he couldn't get services from them. I called a congressman's office in Michigan. He wrote me a letter. And he said Touchstones and Thresholds could not do services for Chris. I think he wrote me more tha one letter. I still have the letters. And I have the one Miss Burlingame wrote me. I also have some of Chris' school records and medical records. Anyway, Chris was still having problems when he was 18th and 19th. The school wanted Chris to go back into Pine Rest Mental Hospital. He was in the hospital in 2000 or 2001. Chris was in the hospital for a week or more. The manager wrote me a letter. And he said the doctor said Chris can come home before Christmas. (I wanted the case manager to give me a letter). I thought the school may not like it if Chris didn't stay in the hospital longer. The teacher and school wanted a say in a lot of things. Chris was still havng problems when he got out of the hospital. I think the school wanted Chris to go back in the hospital. The principal called protective service. Chris was at school. And he was taken to a regular hospital. He later went to St. Mary's Hospital. St. Mary's has a floor for people with a mental illness. Chris was on our insurance and Medicaid. So, we signed him in. He wasn't in this hospital long. After St. Mary's he went back to Pine Rest Hospital. The school social worker did an involuntary petition. So, Chris could stay longer. We didn't know he was going to do this. He needed us to sign the papers. A probate judge was at the hospital when we signed the papers. Chris' father and I were his guardians. However, the court or protective services said we were a hindrance to his mental health needs and physical needs. This is not true. We took care of Chris. He had doctors. And we took him to his appointments. Also, I tried to get services for Chris in the past. Chris got a state guardian. After he got out of the hospital, he went into a crisis home. Later that year--he went into a Hope Network home . It is in Grand Rapids,MI. The home was Ridgeway. It is a home for guys who have a mental illness. The case manager's name was Carrie. Our son wasn't in the home long. I think Chris said something to one of the residents. And he hit Chris. So, Hope Network sent Chris to a home in Nunica, MI. I think this home is for guys who have a mental illness and behavior problems. He was in this home for 3 or 3 and a half year. Chris got a new state guardian in 2005 or 2006. Her name is Karen Bottema. She thought Chris should not be in this home. And on her court report--she said Chris should be in a home for guys with autism. I got a copy o0f her report. Anyway, I called her. I said Chris does not have autism. He has a mental illness. She said a doctor told her this. Chris went into a new home. I think the men in this home had autism or something else. Chris wes the only one who could talk. However, Chris didn't stay in this home long. It was called the Walker Home. He went into a different home. And he wasn't in this home long. Chris has been in 6 or 7 homes.
The first two homes was for men who have a mental illness and bahavior problems. And the other homes are for men who have a developmental disibility. The home he was in the longest is the one in Nunica. I talked his guardian again. And she said now she thinks he has a different disibility. I think she thinks he is cognitive impairment or something else. Chris is smart. Some of the workers at the homes think he is intelligent. Last year, I talked to the Karen (the guardian) again. She said somone told her the only way to get Chris out of the home in Nunica was to say he has autism. I think there should be a state investigation.
