West Virginia – Protect Animals with Animal Cruelty Registry

West Virginia is on a mission, as many other states are, to put an end to the mistreatment, cruelty, abuse and neglect of animals but it is still and ongoing issue nationwide.  I continue to work diligently to try and encourage each state to do more in protecting animals through an animal cruelty registry.  Though West Virginia has concerns, as you can see at http://asci.uvm.edu/equine/law/cruelty/wv_cruel.htm & http://www.preventingcrueltywv.com/, a database could be a crucial tool in protecting animals from abuse, cruelty and neglect.

An animal cruelty registry needs to be similar in stature to that of a sex offender’s or child abuser’s database with serious implications in order to be effective.  The proposed animal cruelty registry would require anyone guilty of any type of animal abuse, cruelty and neglect to be placed on this database, requiring that it be updated on a regular basis.  Additionally, these abusers need to be banned from future pet ownership or ever working with or caring for them for a lifetime.  The database should then be shared with all breeders, shelters, pet shops and others in the pet industry as a mandatory resource.

Animal abusers are rarely held accountable for their crimes and often repeat their offenses against other animals.  Facts have also shown that abusers of animals frequently turn to crimes against humans.  If animal abuse and cruelty is to stop, some serious steps need to be taken to protect these poor, defenseless beings without a voice.  The effort in this petition is to do just that by encouraging the West Virginia State Legislators to implement and strictly enforce such a database.  You can help with this endeavor by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments.

West Virginia State Legislators – It is highly commendable that you are concerned about the welfare of animals statewide and try to take measures to keep them safe.  My effort is to encourage you to implement and strictly enforce an animal cruelty registry database to use as a tool in protecting animals and preventing further abuse.  Such a proposed database should be similar in stature to that of sex offender and child abuser registries, and would require anyone guilty of any type of animal abuse, cruelty and neglect to be placed on this database, requiring that it be updated on a regular basis.  Additionally, these abusers need to be banned from future pet ownership or ever working with or caring for them for a lifetime.  The database should then be shared with all breeders, shelters, pet shops and others in the pet industry as a mandatory resource. Those who abuse animals need to be held accountable!
