NO TUITION FEE INCREASE AT CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

Target:
Concordia Board of Governors
Sponsored by:

Dear Concordia Students,

At the forthcoming meeting of the board of Governors of Concordia, scheduled for Thursday, June 18th at 7:30am, there will be a motion to increase tuition fees for certain international graduate and undergraduate students. We believe that this unwarranted increase in tuition fees is just the start of more to come. As a matter a fact, this increase is part of a systematic increase in tuition fees for the past few years not only at Concordia but also at universities and CEGEPs across Quebec. For the time being, the most affected group of students will be John Molson School of Business (JMSB) graduates and undergraduates as well as Engineering, Arts and Science undergraduates. But this is not the first tuition increase to take place recently: Just this summer, some international students' (e.g. Engineering) tuition fees were also raised unexpectedly. The GSA and the CSU both strongly oppose any increase in tuition as it will increase the financial burden on students who are already struggling during these tough economic times.

GSA and CSU stand firm on the demand of "NO TUITION FEE INCREASE."

We believe that everyone regardless of their race, gender, nationality and economic situation should be able to access education.

If you share our concern, then please support the cause and sign this on-line petition. You can also join the e-mail group at gsaconcordia@listsriseup.net by sending an e-mail request. You will then be getting regular updates on this issue.

Please also come and show solidarity with the GSA and the CSU in a peaceful demonstration on Thursday, June 18th at 7:00am, at GSA House, 2030 Mackay Street (breakfast at 6:45am). At 7:00am SHARP we will head out to peacefully let our voice be heard about this issue.

PETITION

We the undersigned support the Graduate Students Association (GSA) and the Concordia Student Union (CSU) on its stand against the tuition fee increase. I demand that Concordia management not raise the tuition fees and I denounce any such increase as obstructive to educational accessibility and academic performance.

Aquinas College, my alma mater, is increasing its tuition by 25%, like most small colleges! That is unfair!

To whom this may concern, One of the aspects that I enjoy most about Concordia University is being able to study in a multicultural environment. If the proposed increase of international student tuition rates is put into effect, it will put an unfair burden on students from developing countries. In the long term, this will no doubt have a negative impact on Concordia's most precious resource: the wealth of its diversity. Please do not let this happen. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards, Sam Senecal

We are just international students and pay 4 times tuition as much as the one the citizens and permanent immegrants pay. I hope the govern board can consider our poor situation and don't increase tuition fee.

I think the increase of tuition fees for international student will impose us a lot of pressure and influence our study.

From being one year abroad at göteborg university in Sweden, i realize it is actually possible to have free education in university, i was an international student, without paying any tuition and with great support from private foundation for grants as well. So at least, if we cannot have free eduation in québec, PLEASE do not increase at all the tuition, it would not be beneficial to the university system or the image of the education system in quebec, as one being more open and cheaper than the rest of north america, more inspired from european university system. PLEASE. and also, considering free education is necessary.

International tuition fees are already prohibitively high in some cases. As well, many scholarships and other awards have a fixed value, which does not increase with inflation. Thus, for some students, there is an incentive to enroll at first, and later the financial situation becomes more and more difficult.

I understand the University's need to increase it's budget, however by increasing tuition fees, it continues the transformation of the University as a place of higher learning and education into an expensive diploma machine for those with the money to afford it. There are other ways to increase the University's budget.

Give a chance for students to graduate as debt free as possible. I am a graduate from Concordia University and I have now moved to the USA . My boyfriend is American and has over 100 000 dollars in school tuition debt, not counting interests. We should not put students in this predicament ever! We go to school to improve our current society and future generation. Who will further their education if they know they will be head over heels in debt until they retire ?

As a graduate student with two children, tuition increases would affect me. Studying is a demanding process and students should be supported as much as possible through their schooling as they will ultimately be contributing much to society.
