New Mexico's game and fish commissioners, all appointees of Governor Susanna Martinez, a Republican, withdrew state support for Mexican gray wolf recovery work at Turner’s Ladder Ranch. The commission, loaded with ranchers and other rabid wolf-killers, is proactively forcing a shut down of Ted Turners ranch, with a transparently vengeful plan to destroy the endangered wolves of New Mexico. American ranchers have always had an unjustified rage against wolves - claiming they kill cattle. Two things: 1. This claim has NEVER been substantiated. In fact, investigations through the years have shown the claim to be TOTALLY UNTRUE. 2. Much of this continues to be pushed by ranchers WHO ARE GRAZING CATTLE ON PUBLIC LANDS FOR NEXT TO NOTHING. The wolf is indigenous to these lands-cattle and ranchers are NOT!
It's not enough that the ranchers are profiting off our public lands-they demand the kill off of wolves. They are a bunch of hysterical, narrow minded a**holes following decades of a superstition/anecdotal "evidence" of cattle loss to wolves. Ted Turner graciously set up a ranch with space for wolves to rebuild their population - IN THE LAND THEY'VE LIVED ON FOR A MILLENIA.
New Mexico claims its because the Feds haven't "defined their goal" sufficiently so they've refused to reissue the necessary permit for the ranch to continue to operate.
