All That Water & SeaWorld Is still Dirty

SeaWorld opened in 1964. A year later, their first (but definitely not their last) orca was brought into the park. Since then, SeaWorld has continued to illegally procure killer whales, 48 of which have died in SeaWorld.

These beautiful animals are kept in concrete tanks about 1/10,000th of 1% the size of their natural habitat. The tanks are chlorinated and the deepest of them are only 40 feet deep. The mammals barely have enough space to swim, let alone dive, and most of them float around lifelessly. Additionally, they are deprived of using their senses due to the lack of movement and vibrations in the water.

SeaWorld's employees either openly lie to the public or have no knowledge on the animals themselves. They ensure the public that orcas live longer in captivity and are perfectly happy and healthy living in their glorified bathtubs. However, an orca held in captivity will only live about half of its regular lifetime. Employees also state that the majority of male orcas have a flopped over dorsal fin, which is a blatant lie. The killer whales in SeaWorld have flopped dorsal fins due to their lack of exercise and an above-normal exposure to air. They spend too much time floating on the surface rather than diving and staying in the depths as they would usually do.

These killer whales are fed dead fish full of gelatin as well as various sedatives and pills. Rather than attending to their needs, SeaWorld and its doctors turn the other cheek and throw the animals some painkillers. The living conditions are horrendous, especially for such large animals.

For more information on orcas' living conditions in SeaWorld, please refer to the documentary "BlackFish" or check out websites such as SeaWorld of Hurt. There are many existing articles to inform the public about the harsh truths of SeaWorld all over the internet.

We, as well as thousands of people all over the world, are concerned for orcas in captivity and their safety. Please help us help them. The least you could do would be not to buy any tickets for SeaWorld. As long as they make money, the torture will never end.

These whales would be perfectly safe and happy in the open ocean, and hybrid as well as inbred whales could be placed in sea pens or sanctuaries. It's time for these orcas to come home, it's been over 50 years of them living in captivity at SeaWorld.

Please consider signing petitions like these, attending protests, or donating to any conservation groups and charities. There are many ways for you to take initiative and make a difference in these animals' lives.
