Petition to Protect Bellingham's Communities and Environment from Over-Development

FCC [Friends of Climate Care] has successfully exposed a number of "special favors" written into city laws and regulations that favor large corporate developers over the interests of average citizens, local neighborhoods, and smaller, greener housing alternatives. The mega-project now under construction at 900 N. Forest St. [just south of Laurel Street] is the biggest and worst example of this.

Much worse is yet to come, not just on Forest St., but anywhere mega-corporations decide to build luxury condos or other ill-conceived projects in Bellingham.

The Mayor and City Council are already considering budget cuts because of past mistakes in terms of tax breaks and favors for these developers. Now is the time to let them know that they need to act now, not next year on these issues.

Petition to Protect Our Environment from Over-Development

We, the People of Whatcom County, hereby petition our City of Bellingham government to address the many loopholes and pro-development biases written into city ordinances, rules, and regulations that allow for over-development of residential neighborhoods while reducing our actual revenues due to tax breaks for the rich.

These trends are epitomized by the current “boondoggle”/7-story mega-project at 900 N. Forest Street disguised as a 2-story “luxury housing/affordable for students” apartment complex/future condo with an 8-year tax exemption!
