Tell the UK Government to Stop Subsidising the Oil Industry

  • by: Judith B.

Despite some passing lip service to the importance of developing sustainable energy, the UK’s coalition government has been anything but green. Instead of investing in clean energy, the government has been busy handing out lavish bonuses and benefits to the fossil fuel industry.

These generous perks have so far included nearly a billion pounds worth of tax breaks for the oil and gas energy last year alone.

At the same time, renewable energy has suffered a constant series of slashes in government support, rendering the entire industry unstable.

Whether this is a case of “tax breaks for the boys” or a genuine if highly misguided economic strategy, it has got to stop. We can’t afford to keep subsidising an industry with no long-term future that causes so very much environmental devastation.

The UK needs to invest in our future, not in dirty power. Tell George Osborne to take a less destructive path.

We the undersigned insist that you stop handing out perks to the oil industry while cutting back on renewable energy initiatives. This is exactly the opposite of where the UK should be heading and puts our future, environmental and economic, at risk.

We need investment in sustainable technology for the country’s energy future. We do not need an already extremely profitable industry getting the lion’s share of public money, especially considering the immense destruction this industry causes.

Please reconsider your energy policy, which is ill-thought out and short sighted in the extreme.

Thank you for your attention.
