Despite receiving over 4,000 public comments urging an alternative action, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is moving ahead with a plan for a helicopter roundup and removal of 140 wild horses living in Idaho's Challis Herd Management Area. The BLM allows just 185 wild horses to live in this 160,000-acre public land area, and estimates the current population to be 322. The roundup will take place sometime between September 15 and November 15, 2012 -- just over three years after the last BLM roundup at Challis killed at least 11 horses, orphaned several foals, and permanently removed 225 horses from their remote mountain home.
