Release caring elephant mother from her chains!

Elephants are known to have feelings like we humans do and some have recognized themselves in the mirror in studies. So it is obvious that keeping elephants on chains for all their life destroys their physical and mental health. For example, it leads to stereotypical behaviour, but also causes physical damage, especially on the feet that have to stand in the same place filled with mud, faeces and urine every day for hour after hour.

The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) has been the first location in Asia where working elephants live in chain-free corrals, thanks to Elephant Aid International. But neither the elephant handlers, mahouts, nor their superiors know how elephants behave naturally. So they are afraid when the animals are not on chains. Nine-year-old Prakriti Kali, who shows severe sterotypic behaviour when she is chained, has been living in her corral until she had her own calf. She delivered the baby without any help and is a good, caring mother. But NTNC is afraid that she might hurt her own child and so they keep her on chains. This is not only unnecessary, it is torture for a young family!

Get Prakriti Kali off her chains now and let her be free in her corral again so that she can raise her child!

Dear headquarters of NTNC,
dear Chiran Pokheral,

you have been the first location in Asia to let their working elephants roam freely in their corrals instead of letting them suffer being chained to poles. Please don't go backwards now!
Everybody could see the good effects on the elephants. Free Prakriti Kali from her chains again so that she can take care of her child. Since she delivered and started nursing it without any human help, it is obvious that she will go on being a good mother who won't hurt the baby.

When Prakriti Kali is off chains, her mental and physical health are visibly so much better. Let's keep it that way! Be the good example you have been with your chain free hattisar!
We have now collected more than 1,000 signatures from people all over the world who support Prakriti Kali and all other elephans being chain free.

Sincerely,

Marina Loch
