Chicago PD: Fire Cops Who Sexually Assaulted a Civilian With a Screw Driver

  • by: Kailey L.
  • recipient: Chicago Police Department, Mayor Rahm Emanuel

12 years ago, two police officers in Chicago sexually assaulted a young man. They are still members of the force today.

The man, only 20 years old at the time, was working as a local hotel security guard. The officers alleged that he was committing a non-violent crime. After confronting the young man, they then drove him to an alley, stripped-searched him, and kept his pants pulled down. They proceeded to use a screwdriver to sodomize the young man. He suffered internal injuries.

Despite growing instances of police brutality and racial injustice in this country, this one still feels almost too gruesome and shocking to believe.

The act itself is both illegal and degrading, but the injustice continued, as the department refused to take action upon initial complaints. Finally, in 2007 - 3 years later - an extensive investigation and civil jury found the officers blatantly guilty. The victim received a settlement, but the officers were still not fired.

According to the city of Chicago, Lodwich - the officer who watched as the assault took place - made $90,618 last year as an officer. Scott Korhonen, the rapist, earned $87,384.

Not only should these men be permanently removed from the police force, they should be in prison. Tell the Chicago Police Department: stop condoning sexual assault. Fire cops who rape civilians.
