A Barcelona Court has recently sentenced Lionel Messi and his father to 21 months in prison for tax evasion, considering them guilty of evading taxes on more than 4 million euros.
As this sentence must be respected and celebrated as a success in the fight against tax fraud, is very shocking that FC Barcelona had launched a campaign to support Messi in social networks with the hashtag #WeareallMessi. Lionel Messi deserves a deep respect as great football player, but tax evasion is intolerable and doesn’t justify an unconditional defense campaign against a fair trial. Instead of supporting Messi without conditions, FC Barcelona should defend his good performance as a player but publicly condemn any kind of tax fraud.
It’s very important that we all defend the importance of fulfill our tax obligations, whether we are football stars or just average citizens. We must all respect the laws and pay our taxes, including Messi. In consequence, I ask FC Barcelona to stop promoting the #WeareallMessi campaign and issue a public condemn of every kind of fiscal fraud.
