You can can also go to http://www.save-the-ccc.org/ The California Conservation Corps is a 32 year old environmental restoration and youth development program, which the state is trying to shut down. This is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the country. Created in 1976, it's modeled after the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps-a federal program created during the Great Depression to provide jobs for the jobless.
Every year the CCC hires 3,300 corpsmembers, between the ages of 18-25. More than 100,000 young men and women have been part of the CCC since it first started. There are 27 residential and nonresidential centers throughout the state, working in most of California's counties. Crews spend their days working on projects that benefit the community and the environment like park development, trail building, tree planting, energy conservation work, erosion control, fire hazard reduction, fish habitat restoration and so much more.
The CCC is one of California's premier emergency response forces, with more than 9.3 million hours of emergency response since 1976. The CCC has been called out to nearly every major disaster since that time-fires, floods, earthquakes, pest infestations, oil spills. In 2008 alone, corpsmembers provided a half-million hours of fire response to CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forest Service. If replaced by fire personal the cost to the state would have been $20 million. Crews can be dispatched within hours anywhere in the state.
By shutting down the California Conservation Corps, they would be taking away thousands of jobs when we need them the most. The Environment and many endangered species will suffer by the loss of the CCC. We need to speak out now to save the future.

I am writing to you to express appreciation and absolute support for the California Conservation Corps. As my elected official, you have great power to keep this program healthy and operating. The California Conservation Corps has taught are youth important job skills such as leadership, communication, and responsibility. They have also performed critical work for California by constructing and maintaining trails working with more than 250 local, state and federal agencies, eradicated invasive plants preventing local species extinctions, rehabilitate salmon habitats on California's North Coast, and protected millions of people from major disasters.
The California Conservation Corps has provided green jobs to thousands of young men and women from all over the United States since 1976. Not only do they work hard but on their off time they have given more than 23,000 volunteer hours to local communities. They attend school receive their High school diploma or G.E.D's. Many continue their schooling with scholarships they have earned from the state and federal AmeriCorps. They work hard, with low pay, and miserable conditions. That is the California Conservation Corps motto and they take pride in their work. They come from all different backgrounds and all join with one thing in mind, a better future. California needs this valuable program.
Our elected officials can keep this program alive and healthy if they believe in the work California Conservation Corps does. I encourage you visit their web site for further information http://www.ccc.ca.gov/ . Please do not forget us when you are sitting at the table deciding what programs to cut.
The California Conservation Corps has changed my outlook on life and given me hope for the future. Don't let bad government decisions take that away from all of us.
We signed the "Governor targets the CCC!" petition!

Please keep the CCC. As a former corpsmember, I can attest that the program gives young people an opportunity to find themselves through hard work and discipline. It also teaches young people basic work and life skills and allows them to have a sucessful start in adulthood that might not otherwise be possible.
De-funding the CCC will deprive many deserving young people of the opportunity to better their circumstances and eliminate some very important public benefits, such as the flood and fire responses, that are provided by the corps.

CCC is a valuable resource for vocational training and experience for transition age youth. Given the economic climate; the poor outcomes for at-risk youth once they exit foster care; and the overall lack of services for this population; we desparately need this program to give these youth an opportunity to be productive contributing members of society.

I work for Grizzly Youth Academy, based in San Luis Obispo California. We are a free military residential program for students that are at risk of dropping out of school. Typically these students are low income students and have very little resources, and not a good home environment to return back to. Unfortantly, they are only funded to live with us for 5 1/2 months. So C.C.C. and Job Corps are the number one programs we work with. Grizzly is operated by National Guard Youth Challenge Programs, and we have over 33 throughout the United States. All of our other programs resource C.C.C. and Job Corps just as much, and the students have a chance at becoming a productive tax paying citizen of the United States becuase of these programs. I look at it one of two ways; either we pay taxes to help them grow up to become tax paying citizens, or never stop paying taxes for them as our prisoners numbers grow larger then our prisons can hold.

The CCC should be awarded permanent funding for the service it does in putting dedicated young people in places where their passion can be most used. The work these people do is of incalculable value. Environmental restoration work has become more critical by the very fact that the mainstream economy no longer values or reimburses it.

I hope you do not close the CCC, my son joined the CCC in his teen years. It was very benificial in teaching him good work skills, and helped him get a job when he left the CCC. He has since passed, but I know that many teens can benefit from this group, so please do not eliminate it.

The CCC literally saved the life of a friend of mine. She was a troubled teenager, using drugs and making bad choices. She joined the CCC and it turned her life around. She has gone on to college, obtaining her Masters degree in Education and has a powerful positive impact in her community. She is still involved in the CCC after over 25 years. Please do not shut this vital program down, it has and can continue to make a difference in the lives of thousands of young people.

I feel that the CCC is a valuable agency here in South Lake Tahoe. I am California state employee for the Waterboard, and I feel that this program is great for young troubled adults, as well as our environment. Where would we have been without this agency when the Angora fire was wiping away our town? Or the other fires all over California. I think deminishing the CCC isn't a good idea for California's troubled youth or California's environment.

In 1984 I joined "3-C's. I was 20 years old and was clueless about outdoor work. The C's provided me with many skills that I still utilize today. My Daughter also joined the C's and excelled in the Back Country Trails Program.
The C's have helped thousands of kids over the last 33 years. Even after countless Budget cuts on the organization over the years, the C's still survived and prospered. It would be a shame for the Governor to end this vital asset to California.

Please take the CCC off the budget chopping block!
The CCC performs a very valuable service in giving at-risk youth jobs at low cost to the state. It keeps kids off the streets, off drugs, out of jail and provides them with skills to further benefit our state's economy and coffers.
As Van Jones, President Obama and others have pointed out, Green Collar Jobs like the ones that the CCC provide are a way forward for our at-risk youth and cash strapped state.

Well as I see it, the California Conservation Corps provides much needed services to the state. As well as job opportunities for many youths whom need it. It would be detrimental to the state of California, it's wildlife, as well as it's citizens. Please reconsider your decision before everyone suffers the reprucussions of this ill-planned course of action. Thanks.

The CCC should not be cut from the State budget. Especially here in California, where there is such danger of wildfires, they have been a great benefit in protecting our homes, land and waters from floods, fire, oil spills, etc. at a tax savings.
By eliminating the CCC, the State opens up another high expenditure when the next disaster comes along.

I served on the Civilian Conservation Corp's Backcountry Trail Crew. It was probably the most meaningful experience of my life. It completely changed my outlook and was the vehicle for much personal growth. I'd like the CCC to remain in order to give more people the same opportunities that I had.

I joined the CCC in July 2002 and left in January 2003, which were some of the best seven months I had ever invested in. Prior to joining, I was facing very difficult living situations. The CCC gave me another chance to get back on my feet, build my work ethic and learn more about myself in the process. To this day, I continue to benefit from my experiences in the CCC. I see that countless others have as well.
Mr. Schwarzenegger, I am deeply saddened to hear of your decision to cut the California Conservation Corps, which has been sanctuary to many of California's youth. I am especially saddened and disturbed that programs that help illegal immigrants continue to receive more support and funding. Illegal immigrants and non-citizens seem to be receiving more support, funding and assistance than U.S. citizens. Why is this? You have let down so many. Do the right thing and reconsider your decision to cut the badly needed CCC.

Hey Arnold, there is nothing wrong with cutting a social program that hasn't lived up to its initial obligation to eventually be financially self sufficient, BUT c'mon why don't you cut first what is a bigger drain on our state budget. Like cutting off benefits to all the illegal aliens in the state, put a state trooper in every emergency room and have them check proof of residency papers before we let them in.
Arnold, if you need anymore logical suggestions on how to get this state running in the black, please look me up, I'd be glad to help. thanks, Greg Nicoll

The California Conservation Corps would take away so many jobs, and many of the young adults who are a part of this program, this is a good job that they can perform when all other options have run out. In addition the environment must be protected by more than just the public. Please do not eliminate this program!!

This program provides job training, with a positive, productive outcome. Trails are cleared, structures are built, support is given for fire related incidents and many more examples that benefit everyone in the community.
In addition, a personal friend has a son who is now a Corp member. Thanks to the program this young man has a job he enjoys and also the comradely of fellow workers who also have found a place to train to become productive citizens.
Elementing this program would be a real misfortune.

The Corps gave me a start, an ethic and some great times. At $3.10 per hour I would do it all over again, hopefully with the insight that this was the pivotal moment in my life, career wise, and would open so many doors through my gaining of a good work ethic and teamwork skills.
I signed the other petition on the save-the-ccc.org website, but that link has been disconnected due to the recent decision to take the C's off the budget cuts. May I say that is a mistake. Not everyone has voiced their sentiments of how the Corps has influenced their lives in a posative manner and why this program is so worthy and indespensible. Please repost the link to the other petition too and even form a link on this site so that there is no mistaking that our voices are heard in this matter.
Thank you.

My son is in the ccc's and I have seen what a wonderful program for young people this is first hand. It has given him a sense of pride in a job well done and encourages him to be the best he can be, the challenges given to the corp members encourage them to push themselves to be leaders and learn a work ethic and to be a team player. It has given him direction in his future career he would not have otherwise gotten working at a civilian job. It also gives him a chance to give back to his community. I am very proud to say I am the mother of a California Conservation Corp member.

The California Conservation Corps is getting thrown out of the budget system because Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger administration representatives said "the corps performs good work but costs too much as the governor and legislators continue to struggle to close a forecast $42 billion budget deficit."
According to this website http://www.indeed.com/salary?q1=CALTRANS+HIGHWAY+MAINTENANCE+WORKER&l1=CA
$123,000 are going to the pockets of hard working Caltrans workers.
The point is don't shutdown a program that efficiently enough takes and keeps many potential kids (not just criminals) off the streets.

Please do not destroy this VERY EFFECTIVE program. It not only helps the environment, it helps people get a sense of self value. I have met CCC workers while photographing a project called Conserving California's Landscapes Initiative for The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The work the Corps does is invaluable, and the opportunity provided to those for whom opportunities are rare is CRITICAL. It would be foolish, shortsighted and detrimental to all to close down this program.
Thank you.

We need to all band to gether and let the govnernor know how penny wise and dollar follish he is being when he suggest that eliminating the CCC would save money. I wonder how many dollars his buddies in the contracting business will reap at the expense of the tax payer if this move is completed? Just the doallars saved in their response to the wildland fires in California alone will more than offset any dollars that are spent out of the general fund. In addition the hours that they work for the local projects in their communities that could not be completed without their help these projects would not be completed.

The California Conservation Corps has helped me find myself and get on my feet to actually want to succeed in my life. As a Corps i have had the experience of attending two fires and one spike. I see that we help out the firefighters and make the camp grounds easier to function. Not to mention what we learn from the fire fighters and job experiences we may receive. The Corps is a great program and as i'm still employed by the Corps, I'm fighting for the Corps to stay open.

The CCC provides so many benefits. It helps youth, it helps protect our wild places, it helps provide recreational opportunties, it instills a love and appreciation for natural processes. All this for a very inexpensive investment. In difficult times when we must leverage our resources, the CCC provides a lot of bang for the buck. We should support it.

My grandfather Gordon Michels was one of the original CCC members in Yosemite during the 1930s depression. FDR put people back to work with the help of the CCC's and they were one of the most impactful groups to restore the National Parks, and Americans pride in this dark time. In 2009 we again enter a time of great depression in which the CCC's can do what FDR started and hopefully President Obama can continue. I am proud of my grandfathers heritage and work he accomplished in the CCC's as we all should be!
