Petition Against the Construction of Tipaimukh Dam

Target:
Indian PM Mr Manmohan Singh

The Tipaimukh Hydroelectric Project  is being constructed near the confluence of Barak and Tuivai rivers, in Manipur, India and within 100km of Bangladesh border.

Public and environmentalists alike expressed deep concern if the project is implemented it could deprive Bangladesh of its share of the international river that supplies waters to hundreds of water bodies in the region. They fear that the dam would ultimately dry up the Meghna River in the greater Sylhet region and neareby districts. The dam will kill all common rivers of the country particularly the Meghna River, the biggest river of the country. The construction of the dam when completed in 2012 would bring about a major disaster for Bangladesh, virtually drying up the Surma and the Kushiara rivers in winter season, which water most of the north-eastern regions of Bangladesh. The Tipaimukh dam would seriously affect not only agriculture, particularly in winter, but is also going to bring about negative ecological and environmental changes in vast areas in both Bangladesh and India. You must stop this disaster from taking place.

In the name of development, Government of India has been building dams without the consent of the Indigenous people. Constructions of Tipaimukh Hydro project will displace thousands of people. It will bring ecological imbalance to the North Eastern Region of India including Bangladesh. Almost one-third of Zeliangruang Naga's land in Indian state of manipur will be submerge under water. With the construction of the dam, topography of the areas will drastically change. Therefore, Government of India Hear the peoples' voice! What is being democracy for?

Please take some consideration into constructing this dam, if you were any wiser, you would know to do better, and make the right decision into demolishing the plan. This project is an open gate-way to people losing their homes, and thousands and even millions being in starvation.
# 282:

The construction of this project will be the sole cause for destruction, therefore being: agricultural activities that many depend to for a living, and also people being forcibly removed from their own homes so that hydro-power schemes can go ahead, and many more factors that will destroy many lives. Continuing to pursue building this dam is unethical and disapproving.

The revenge on environment is slow but irreversibly catastrophic & it's not confined to any geopraphy. So if India thinks nothing wrong will happen to them , that's completely wrong

By building this dam India will contribute towards the ecological imbalance of the territory and will farther subject the people of Bangladesh to floods and draught. Bangladesh has been paying a high price since the inception of the Farakkah barrage, which had been a key source of conflict between India and Pakistan back in 1964. Bangladesh has more than its share of natural calamities and her countrymen suffer each year from cyclones, draughts and or floods. Being a much smaller country and plagued with poverty, corruption, diseases and pollution, Bangladesh cannot do much to influence India with her limited economic resources. The world must pressure India to refrain from building similar dams that deprive neighbors from God’s blessings.

I used to live near Padma/Ganga river in Bangladesh, that was about 30 years ago. I that Padma river resembles nothing what we currently have due to impact from Farakka Dam. So lets your voice be heard.

India, being so indifference to the need of it's neighbor, went ahead and made Farakka dam back in the 70's. We are well aware of the ecological and environmental disaster experienced by the Western part of Bangladesh due to this Farakka dam. Now the target is the Eastern part of Bangladesh! Their intention is well known to the conscious people of Bangladesh, who refuse to be subservient to the India’s bully.

This river is international, it is not India's alone. Building a dam on it would affect Bangladesh largely. This is a very selfish decision on India's part and we should raise our voices to stop this project immediately.
