Stricter penalties for Animal Cruelty convictions in Ontario

It is a well known fact that Canada's animal cruelty laws are outdated and simply not suitable for this type of crime. A maximum of 2 years or up to $60,000 as well as a ban on owning animals. Jail time is rarely imposed. This is simply not adequate punishment for crimes involving starving, neglecting, torturing, or emotionally abusing animals.

How can someone who would willingly harm an innocent animal be allowed to walk among other animals or children for that matter. What lesson is learned from an insignificant fine? How can we be sure they haven't attained animals under other circumstances and are repeating their cycle of violence and neglect?

It is time for a change in the way we perceive animals and their worth. Money doesn't replace the emotional abuse the animal suffered. Money doesn't bring the animals back from being tortured and killed. By updating our laws and imposing jail time, an example will be set that animal cruelty is not tolerated.

By signing this petition we are standing up for animals. We are demanding the laws and punishments associated with animal cruelty be updated. Jail time must accompany a conviction of malicious animal cruelty. It's time for a change and the change starts with us!
