Each year, Americans send 161 million tons of trash to the landfill.  Here at Southold Union Free School District in Southold, Long Island, we send approximately 90 tons of trash to the landfill each year.  That is over 1,100 lbs of trash per day!  But, we want to start a recycling program for bottles and cans in our high school in order to greatly reduce the amount of trash from our school.

Our school already recycles paper and cardboard, and the elementary school recycles bottles & cans, and composts.  We can save money, greatly reduce our waste, and help to be good stewards of our local and global ecosystem.

So what are we waiting for?  Please sign this petition, and be sure to further contact our school officials, including:

David Gamberg, Superintendent of Southold UFSD & Greenport UFSD

William Galati, Principal of Southold Junior/Senior High School

Michael Brostowski, Southold Junior/Senior High School Dean of Students and Athletic Director

Remember, it shouldn't hurt to help the Earth.  And in the words of Social Studies teacher Ivan Santiago, “How are we going to teach the youth when we ourselves don’t practice.”

I am writing to you because I feel that Southold JR/SR High school should begin a recycling program for bottles and cans.

Thank you for your consideration of starting a recycling program in our school.

Sincerely,
