Tell Governor Jindal You Oppose Unnecessary Regulations on Abortion Clinics

The Louisiana Department of Health Hospitals (DHH) has proposed new regulations that place even more restrictions on abortion providers. These regulations set strict standards for issuing licenses to abortion providers and give DHH the right to deny clinics of their existing licenses for reasons that have nothing to do with patient health and safety.

These regulations proposed by DHH are aimed at restricting access to abortion care, not at improving quality of care. If enacted these new regulations:

  • Will set unnecessarily strict standards for obtaining a license to provide abortion services in outpatient clinics
  • Will give DHH the ability to shut clinics down for reasons entirely unrelated to patient health and safety
  • Will create a significant burden on women seeking safe and legal abortion services

Combined with a separate law, HB 388, which also imposes restrictions unsupported by medical experts, these efforts could drastically reduce and eventually eliminate access to safe, legal abortion services. We all want to protect patient safety—these restrictions don’t do that.

Please sign the petition to DHH officials urging them to Trust Louisiana Women and stop their attempt to restrict access to safe and legal abortions.

To Whom It May Concern:

I oppose the proposed Abortion Facilities Licensing Standards, which are a politically-motivated and targeted attack on abortion providers for overregulation, without any medical basis.  The regulations give DHH the right to deny a clinic of its license for reasons that have nothing to do with patient health and safety.  This comes at a time when clinics will already be forced to close, and access to safe and legal abortion is under the greatest threat that Louisiana has ever seen.

The regulations are intended to be burdensome and punitive to clinics and to the women they serve.  This is not the way to ensure quality of care.  The complete overhaul of the licensing standards is an attempt to shut down legally operating healthcare facilities and to prevent others from opening.  Yet, the regulations do nothing to ensure patient confidentiality or to protect the privacy of clinic staff and physicians.

Women and families in Louisiana deserve better.  They deserve access to healthcare, to know that their right to a safe and legal health procedure will not be denied, and to know that their privacy will be protected.

I urge DHH to stop its targeted attacks on abortion providers and to revise the proposed regulations to ensure that the rights of Louisianans are protected.

Sincerely,
