Close Keyesville Recreation Site/Bring Awareness to dangers of Kern River after death of Mya Calderon, 11

On September 1st, 2017 Mya Skye Calderon, 11, went on a family camping trip for Labor Day Weekend to Keyesville Recreation Camp (Kern River). Around 12:50pm Mya and her cousins were playing in a small tide pool on the side of the river. While climbing a rock Mya lost her footing and fell into the Kern River. Her family at the campsite immediately called 911 and her grandfather dove into the river after her. Unfortunately, he was not able to find her. Due to the strong current and undertow, the rescue team had to help remove her grandfather from the river. The family immediately began their search for Mya. On Saturday, September 2nd, a family member found Mya about 500 yards from where she had fallen in the river. This would be the 15th life the Kern River had taken in 2017. Her family is devastated by this loss. At just 11 years old Mya had her whole life ahead of her. She loved her family, nature, animals, and more importantly the Lord. The Kern River is nicknamed the “Killer Kern” for a reason and something has to be done to bring awareness and safety to this area. Demand that the campsites along the Kern River are closed until they are made safe. Please sign this petition for Mya and all the other people who have lost their lives to the Kern River. We want to maintain Mya’s legacy and prevent another family from experiencing such a devastating loss.
