United Nations - Declare Nov 10 as World Dog Day

  • by: Manish Jaitly

A dog is truly man's best friend. Unconditional love is just one of the gifts dogs give us and teach us. The relationship between humans and dogs goes back to almost 32000 years. Dogs have helped humans not only as pets but also as guide dogs for the handicapped, police dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs, war dogs and much more. It is high time a truly global day (declared by the UN) is declared for them and hence I request as many people as possible to sign this petition and urge Mr. Motohide Yoshikawa (the permanent ambassdor of Japan to the UN) to place a proposal before the United Nations to declare Nov 10 (Hachiko's birthday) as the World Dog Day. Hachiko was one of the most loyal dogs to have lived and his story has been made in several films, the most recent one being Hachiko - A Dog's Tale starring Richard Gere. Hachiko waited for his dead master at the railway station for almost ten years after the latter's death. Hachiko lived in Japan and hence it is only fit to have a Japanese representative petition the UN. The World Dog Day will not only create greater awareness and understanding about dogs but also reduce cruelty towards them such as in the Chinese Dog Meat festival and elsewhere. I urge as many people as possible from different countries to sign this petition.

PS - Some countries such as the US do have their National Dog Days, however those 'days' are not truly global but are country specific only. The fact is, unless a day has been declared by the United Nations (such Labor/Women's,etc.) it is not truly global, hence, signing this petition is important.

Respected Mr. H.E. Mr. Motohide Yoshikawa

I started a petition for you to submit a proposal to the United Nations to declare Nov 10 as the World Dog Day. I chose Nov 10 as this is the day the famous Japanese Dog Hachiko was born. Hachiko waited for his master for ten years after the latter's death and became a symbol of loyalty. Since Hachiko lived in Japan, it makes total sense for Japan to make a proposal to the United Nations. I am sending you the following signatures of various people who signed this petition.

The signatures in this mail are from the petition posted at care2.com and the petition link is http://tinyurl.com/op9x5sm. However I am closing the petition at this site and have restarted it on Change.org and the new link is http://tinyurl.com/npvk9l8 - I hope to collect many more signatures at the new site.
